City of Oxford, Tick!

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club enjoyed a great day’s racing at the annual City of Oxford summer regatta held on Saturday 15 August. The Women’s Junior 15 Quadruple sculls crew were victorious winning comfortably by three lengths against a crew from City of Cambridge. The Stratford crew members are Claire Teakle (stroke), Olivia Hansen, Isabella Rosso, Sofia Ward (bow) and Emily Brooks (cox).

Stratford crews also made the finals in several other events including Women’s Novice double sculls Catherine Simpson and Danielle Raymond competing at their first regatta; Junior Boys Conrad Bird & Isaac Herring and Junior Girls Isabella Rosso & Claire Teakle J15 sculls.

Said coach Mark Holden, “All Stratford’s crews enjoyed some competitive racing over 1 km on the Isis, a picturesque stretch of the River Thames. The Club is now looking forward to this weekend’s local regatta at neighbouring Warwick Boat Club and a final regatta of the season at Ross on Wye on 29/30 August to close what has been a very successful season for the Club.”SuABC City of Oxford girls quad

Regatta Invitation

Many thanks to all who joined us on Saturday 20th June 2015 on the banks of the Avon, opposite the RST for a great day of rowing.

Our Annual Regatta wouldn’t be possible without the support of our fabulous sponsors, listed on the left – THANK-YOU!

Sunday 12th April – Abingdon Head

Conditions were very challenging with gusting wind and a strong field including several clubs from the Upper Thames region and the likes of City of Oxford and RGS High Wycombe.  Some of our juniors were rowing up and some competing for the first time against senior crews and with three wins and valuable experience gained, with this being the final Head, we are now eagerly looking forward to Regatta season.

Saturday 21st March – Kingston Head of the River

Congratulations to our Masters E4+ crew of Stephen Haighton, Glyn Hawkins, Tim Hayter, Simon Beard and Jen Clements for winning their class and also being the second fastest Coxed Four of the day! The strong northerly head wind created very choppy conditions and made the 5,200m course a real challenge, especially for those more used to the Avon,  but our crew showed the locals a thing or two beating the Kingston RC MasE 4+ by 35 secs on their own water. The crew also beat all the other Masters crews, all the senior 4+ crews with the exception of Worcester Uni IM2 4+ (although the second placed IM2 4+ were beaten by 1min 17 secs) and many IM3 8+s. The event saw Leander score a 1, 2, 3 with the first boat crewed by many internationals including Matt Gotterall, who learned to row at Stratford.

Saturday 21st March – Runcorn Head of the River

In a composite MasD 8+ crew with Bridgnorth, Tom Doherty and Richard Nelson won their class at Runcorn by a large margin. In fact they beat all bar 7 crews in the event including 2 IM1 ,2 IM2, 6 IM3, and all 6 other MAS A,B,C,crews.

This composite crew is in training for the Vets Head of The River and will be coxed by our own Jen Clements, so this was a very promising performance for the Tideway next week.

Sat 14 Feb – Worcester Head

Despite a valiant effort by a very depleted junior squad, they didn’t manage to secure any wins this time and neither did our seniors, however our veteran crews battled the cold and the fog in the morning to secure two wins.

Sun 7 Dec – Monmouth Christmas Head of the River

Frank Hamilton, Harry Stirling, Ben Gittus Smith and Denis Bradulin went to a quality Head hosted by Monmouth Rowing Club. In the morning division they all joined forces in a IM1 Quad and impressed onlookers, winning their category in style, beating a strong Bewdley boat in the process.

Then in the afternoon division team mates became competitors as Harry and Frank took on Ben and Denis (as well as three other crews) in the IM1 doubles. Youngsters Harry and Frank managed to hold off Ben and Denis to win by just one second, the Stratford boats again leading all other opposition to win the catagory.

Thanks go out to host club for lending the boys a boat to row in after theirs suffered a broken rigger just minutes before getting on the water.
