British Rowing’s Rowing Leaders Course at SuABC
11 young West Midlands rowers spent two weekends in December on British Rowing’s Rowing Leader course at SuABC. The 16 hour programme enables participants to conduct a simple risk assessment, explain basic rowing techniques, and plan, deliver and evaluate sessions and activities under the supervision of a qualified coach. The course was led by our Head Coach, Andy Roe.
“Personal and crew safety are paramount in rowing”, said Paul Hazelwood, our Safety Advisor. “Risk assessments and recognising your responsibility for those you are coaching heightens safety awareness.” Our Junior Co-ordinator, Will Bird, shared his enthusiasm ”Because they have only recently learnt to row themselves, rowing leaders find really effective ways of talking to aspiring rowers. They are a valuable part of our team”

Well done to everyone who took part today. A fantastic day’s rowing including FIVE golds, 3 silvers and 3 bronzes for our own crews and 2 silvers and 3 bronzes for our KES boys.

Veteran Fours Head 1/12/13
Stratford’s Masters D4+ (Stephen Haighton, Glyn Hawkins, Tim Hayter and Tom coxed by Jen Clements) came second in their category in the Veteran Fours Head on the Thames from Putney to Chiswick on Dec 1st with a time of 20:33, beaten only by a Thames crew but beating Warwick’s Masters B4 by 12 seconds!
Hampton Small Boats Head 16/11/13
The Club made a strong entry for Hampton Small Boats Head which was raced over a 3km downstream course. Weather and river conditions were perfect. All our crews gave a very good account of themselves in one of the top and most competitive sculling events in the rowing calendar. Almost 800 boats took part over two divisions. Stats/Results below:

Camilla is Athlete of the Week
Club member Camilla Hadland talks about what rowing means to her as she celebrates being Durham University’s Athlete of the Week. As always inspirational!
NB: Competing at the highest level in any sport will boost your weekly shop and other bills. For most of us mere mortals rowing is a very affordable.
Henley Sculls 2/10/13
Both the conditions and competition were tough so no wins but some great performances including Imogen North WJ16 1x who came 3rd of 27 and Franklin Hamilton/Harry Stirling who finished 4th in J18 2x. Esme Booth also produced a fine row to finish 6th and in the top half of the field at WJ15 1x. Special mention should go to all of our J14 entrants who produced some plucky performances in really challenging conditions with gusting headwinds making it virtually impossible at times to keep a single sculling boat moving. All our crews put in strong competitive rows including seniors Phil Marshall and Jo Wyles who decided to keep going at the finish for a scenic row up the Thames. Results below:

River & Rowing Museum
Former Club Captain, Bill Collins, wrote an impressive history of the Club (1874 to 1974). When the River & Rowing Museum in Henley found out about it, they asked for a copy and some of our Juniors members were happy to help. As we get ready to celebrate our 140th Anniversary next year, if you would like to help build our archive please contact us.
