Regatta thanks, makes it all worth while

Hi, I am writing to thank you all for putting on the regatta last Saturday even with the weather!

I just wanted to share with you something that makes it all worthwhile.

Due to the weather effecting the timescale slightly our 2 J14 quads, one boys and one girls were due to put to the water at about the same time. As we only had one cox we quickly asked one of our rowers sisters (who is very shy and has just started to learn coxing with ourselves) to jump into the boys quad. I say asked, we didn’t really give her any time to think about it. Your stewards were really helpful in finding some weights to bring her up to the minimum requirement, and away she went.

In a really close race we managed to win by just a couple of feet. Our coach said that of all the events of the day seeing this little girl who is usually very shy, smiling from ear to ear and even doing a little victory fist pump! was by far the most memorable.

She now can’t wait to continue coxing and start to learn to row sometime later this year.

Thanks again

Coxless Quad (4x) – Fund raising

Junior members of the club have identified the need for a 4x so that J16 and older can compete. They have resolved to raise funds, seek whatever grant aid may be available and adopt other ideas to amass a target of £8000. Parents with appropriate expertise have stepped in to help, guide and search for grant aid.

Lucy Honychurch, our Junior Captain has launched the fund by seeking sponsorship for competing in the Stratford Half Marathon on Sunday 29 April. Here’s what Lucy had to say about it:

A wet and windy start to our fundraising for the four!! Last Sunday when I ran the half marathon (beginning the marathon task of raising enough money for a new boat) the weather conditions weren’t ideal…. However hard the wind blew, however hard the rain thrashed, I was going to run this race! There I was at the start- feeling a little like an animal for the slaughter behind all the metal fencing with all the other runners- ready to finish already. We began. The beginning was good- lots of spectators cheering and lots of things to keep me distracted. Everything was going good until Welford when the wind picked up, the rain began to sting your face as it was harshly blown into it, and there were no more spectators along the route to raise our spirits. But I kept going…the thought of a cup of tea spurred me on! Through all the puddles, and up the couple hills, along lots of roads…..finally I made it to the finish line! After 1 hour and 46 minutes and 50 seconds I could finally stop. However it definitely felt worth it. But of course when I stopped running, the rain didn’t stop raining. So I went to my second home; where I knew I could find a little warmth and shelter (and some spare dry kit that I could steal!) So I went to the boat club. I ran the half marathon for my boat club, and to help the juniors out. A have already raised a few funds from the half marathon which I am extremely grateful for, but a couple extra pounds from a couple extra people will make last Sunday even more worthwhile! So dig deep and help out your boat club.

Forthcoming fund raising events so get the dates in your diaries NOW:

SUABC produces 2 world gold medalists

James Roe

James Roe

At the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, James won Gold in the LTA mixed coxed four with crewmates Pamela Relph, Naomi Riches, David Smith, and (cox), Lily van den Broecke.

In Munich at the first World Cup of 2011 James raced in one of two GB LTAMix4+ boats to take gold with Germany in 2nd and the other GB boat taking bronze.

At the 2010 World Rowing Championships on Lake Karapiro in New Zealand, James – along with his crewmates Ryan Chamberlain, Kate Jones, Kelsie Gibson and cox Rhiannon Jones, won a silver medal in the adaptive mixed coxed four.  They narrowly led the race until the dying 100m when the Canadians surged to take the lead, crossing the line four-tenths of a second ahead of the British boat to win gold.  Germany took the bronze.

Earlier in the season James won gold in the LTAMix4+ at the first World Cup in Bled.  This followed the two gold medals he won in the same boat at the Varese International Adaptive Regatta in May.

James won gold in the adaptive mixed coxed four at the 2009 World Championships in Poznan; this success achieved by a crew with two rowers and the cox completely new to World Level rowing this year.

He was a new member of the adaptive squad in 2009 and his first GB vest was at the Varese International Regatta in the LTA mixed coxed four where he won gold on both days.  He raced in the same boat class for the Munich World Cup winning gold.

James graduated from Oxford Brookes University in 2009 with a BA degree in Fine Art.  When he has time he does some coaching at Stratford-upon-Avon Boat Club.

James is Lottery Funded through UK Sport.

Ranking?
Press/Media Coverage?
What would you say your greatest sporting achievement is?
I would say that so far, being selected to represent Great Britain has been my greatest achievement, but I hope there will be many more achievements this coming season that I can claim to be my greatest in the near future.
What are your future aspirations in your sport?
My main aim for this year is to compete at the Junior World or European Championships. For the future, I want to progress to eventually make it onto the senior rowing team for the world championships and maybe even the Olympics.

How often do you train?
I currently train 6 days a week, and have Friday as my day off. Weekdays I land train from 4pm-6pm and the weekends 9am-1pm on the water. Also, training camp in Chester for 2 weeks, followed by a week’s training camp in Caversham.
Why do you enjoy participating in sport?
I enjoy sport for the buzz that I get when I’m taking part and competing, and I can’t get that feeling from anything else. I also enjoy meeting new friends from all over the country that I know I’ll stay in touch with for a long time.

How may being selected to receive a CAP Bursary help you in your sporting career?
The bursary will allow me to travel to essential training camps and competitions, allowing me to progress further in the GB rowing system and hopefully achieve my goal of rowing at the Junior World, or European Championships this year
