Stratford Clean Up at Evesham!

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s J17 squad were represented by the single scull of Sophie Frankin and the double scull of Isla Dunn and Becca Smith at the weekend’s Evesham Regatta. First down the track was Sophie who was pitted against an experienced Worcester sculler and was unable to hold onto an early lead. The Dunn/Smith combination dominated the semi-final against Pengwern however met their match in a quality AB Severn crew in the final.

The Stratford J15 squad created a presence in Saturday’s racing having success in the finals and keeping the pressure on their competitors in the 1000m knock out races.

First up, the OpJ15 x 2 of Nathan Lebordais and Reuben Stanford took an early win against Magdalen College in their semi final before giving AB Severn a run for their money in the final, placing a well-earned second overall. Lebordais and Stanford returned later in the day as part of the OpJ15x 4 joined by Raya Hothi (cox), Connor Birrell and Tristan Hammick. The crew defeated Magdalen and then Monmouth in the heats to earn a place in the final against AB Severn. While there was a strong start off the line, the AB Severn squad maintained a pace over the 1000 meters that was just out of reach for the Stratford crew who came into second overall.

Abi Dunn competing in the WJ15 x 1 singles brought home some silverware by starting with a convincing first win against her Evesham opponent in the semi-finals setting up a tense head to head final with fellow Stratford rower from J14. During a close race, Abi kept a consistent lead all the way through and secured victory by half a length.

The WJ15 x 4 composed of Martina Bruce (cox), Lily Parsons, Meredith Paul, Bethany Hammond and Scarlett Wheeler delivered a strong performance showing strength, resilience and determination as they beat Monmouth by two and a half  lengths in the semi-final and faced off against a second Monmouth crew in the final. From the start the team pushed for the lead, running neck and neck over the 1000 meters and, in a nail biting finish won by a canvas, taking home the win. This was especially savoured as three in the crew had rowed earlier in the day in their respective WJ15x2 pairs (Parsons/Paul and Bruce/Hothi) and they were keen for a win!

The J14 squad made the most of Evesham’s two day event by representing Stratford Boat Club on both days. Amongst some encouraging performances, and some hard won lessons on pacing and steering, the stand-out crew from Saturday’s longer course were the boys’ quad of Archie Eaton, Chris Durance, Arthur Burt, Ethan Siwakowski and Eli Ford as coxswain. They completely outclassed Magdalene College School in the first round then earned an equally composed win against Cheltenham College to secure a spot in the final where an Evesham/AB Severn Rowing Club composite edged them out in a close race.

Sunday’s sprint started early for Amelia Cruickshank who gamely volunteered to row for an Evesham quad depleted by injury. Returning later that day she joined Islay Milles in the WJ14 single sculls. The two girls mercilessly worked their way through the qualifying rounds to set up a thrilling Stratford-Stratford final that was too close to call until the closing stages when Milles lit the afterburners to edge to victory.

Also, Stratford’s Women’s Masters 2x of Ellie Davies and Gina Fusco, raced in a final against a Women’s Masters E double Stourport crew. Despite steering a rather longer  than necessary racing line, the duo were delighted to hold off their opponents and take the win by a canvas.

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s J13 squad enjoyed an exciting and memorable day of racing at the Evesham Sprint Regatta, where they competed in singles, doubles and quad scull events. For all the athletes, this was their first experience of side‑by‑side racing, making the occasion both challenging and rewarding. Many of the rowers had only rowed in singles or doubles two or three times before, never mind racing them, yet every athlete rose to the occasion and performed admirably under pressure.

The three doubles crews of Hattie McGurk and Zilpha Pope, Ruben Hawkswell and Eftychios Ntoukakis, and Safian Khan and Luke Spurling were first on the water. All three crews showed confidence and determination, each holding their own throughout the race and finishing a very close second.

The singles races followed, with strong performances from Gregor Francis, Enoch Stanford, Georgia Wheeler, Margo Paul, Zilpha Pope, Natasha Wallace and Harriet Wheeler. Despite first‑time racing nerves, all rowed with composure and confidence. A special mention goes to Margo Paul, who delivered a commanding performance to win the WJ13 singles event, beating the opposition by an impressive two and a half lengths.

In the quad sculls, the boys’ crew of Enoch Stanford (cox), Gregor Francis (stroke), Safian Khan, Eftychios Ntoukakis and Ruben Hawkswell put up a strong and determined performance but were knocked out by the eventual winners, a very strong home crew from Evesham. The girls’ quad of Harriet Wheeler (cox), Margo Paul (stroke), Natasha Wallace, Hattie McGurk and Georgia Wheeler also raced with great spirit, losing to the Evesham crew.

Throughout the day, all crews showed superb teamwork and sportsmanship, running the course during each race to loudly cheer one another on. Commenting, Rebecca Paul, J13 Coach said, “It was a proud and promising first experience of side‑by‑side racing and an encouraging sign for the future of these young athletes.”

Next up in eights division the Stratford Women’s Masters D VIII were determined to maximise the six second head start they had against a composite younger Gloucester and Evesham crew. After a solid start and a race pace of thirty four strokes per minute, the crew widened the gap and held their opposition over the 1000m course with a convincing win of three and a half  lengths. The crew were Jen Cary, Cox, Ellie Davis Stroke, Gina Fusco, Jane Cryer, Abby Symons, Rebecca England, Lucy Scarlett, Caroline Collins and Charlotte Jones (Bow). Bow seat Charlotte Jones said, “We are delighted with our first win of the regatta season as an eight, following our winter training. We are looking forward to our next race at the Nottingham Masters next week.”

Almost immediately after deboating from the VIII, Rebecca England and Lucy Scarlett took to the river again to race in the senior women’s 2x. In their first regatta of the season together, they had a good start and were pleased with their row despite being bested by a very high quality and youthful opposition.

The Women’s Masters low CRI coxed quad of Sarah Walker, Urania Carreiro, Emily Burton  and Charlotte Juxon with cox Sarah Bedwell were determined to give the home crew a good race in the semi final.  Despite much distraction at the start with a single stuck in a tree, a capsize and a double very much told off for a quick race practice, the crew refocused, stuck to their plan and won comfortably. A few timing issues to improve and with Sarah B still ringing in their ears, it was time for the final. Much more relaxed and ready to fight again the crew raced hard and gained ground quickly. This gave the lift and belief needed and they pushed past their opposition at the half way point, then stayed flat out for the last 500m again winning comfortably.

Their coach Dawson Curnock said of the crew, “Two great performances including the win in their final are the culmination of commitment to training that they embarked upon over three months ago.”

In Stratford’s last race of the regatta, the mixed 2x of Rebecca England and Thomas Doherty faced a tough task with local rivals Warwick having a head start due to the masters’ handicap system. Despite this, the Stratford double managed a fast start, leaving the blocks at a rate of thirty eight strokes per minute and were able to row down their competition, winning by a length and a half.

Stratford in Spain, Ironbridge and Henley

Stratford upon Avon Boat Club’s adaptive section were represented at the IMART Regatta in Spain by Paola and Ian Ward where they travelled with the rest of the international teams to Orio where the regatta was taking place. Due to high winds and choppy waters, they were only allowed to go in wide boats to get familiar with the massive river Orio which is a strong tidal river so they had to wait until 16.00hrs for boating. The weather was fine apart from the wind.

The next day, the competitors were taken out again but this time for the competition. Paola and Ian raced in a fine double sculling against Armida Club from Italy. Unfortunately, this time, they were faster than the Stratford crew. Commenting, Paola said, “We found our boat settings difficult to adjust so our main objective was to avoid a capsize!”

Later, Paola and Ian sculled in a coxed wide quad combined with two of our Italian friends. Again, they lost to our Italian home opposition!

Commenting further, Paola said, “Apart from losing, we have had a great time learning a lot and meeting old friends and making new ones! We’ll be back on the Avon this week!”

Several masters crews went to Ironbridge Regatta over the weekend . A beautiful setting in the Ironbridge Gorge with lots of sun and some blustery wind. Rebecca England at stroke and Lucy Scarlett at bow in the women’s 2x were the first of the Club’s crews to take to the water. An unusually swift starting sequence unfortunately led to the Stratford crew being slightly askew off the start costing crucial early momentum. Despite this, the Stratford double refocused, pushed hard and steadily gained ground, nearly drawing level by the final stretch. While the early deficit proved slightly too much on this occasion, they appreciated the race experience and look forward to building on it over the summer.

Next up In their debut regatta, Jack Ingleby (stroke) and Tom Stokes (bow) delivered a strong performance in the Open Double Sculls. Despite a solid row and good pace, they were beaten by a more experienced Pengwern crew. A very promising performance to start their racing journey.

In their first race together, the women’s masters B coxed 4 of Rebecca England, Suzie Radley, Lucy Scarlett, Fiona Schulz and Jenn Cary (cox) were drawn against Huntingdon in their semi-final. The Stratford crew started strong, winding up the rate and quickly gaining a lead within the first few hundred metres. They maintained a consistent rhythm, extending their lead to two and a half lengths by the finish line to secure their spot in the final. After a quick turn around, Stratford took to the river again, this time to face a master’s C Bewdley crew. Benefitting from a head start and a bye through to the final the Bewdley 4+ took an early lead. Although the Stratford crew fought hard and reduced the deficit over the course of the race, they were unable to catch their opponents on this occasion. Stratford will look to build on this performance over the course of the summer.

Last of the Stratford crews to begin their racing  was the quad of Ellie Davies (stroke), Gina Fusco, Christine Goodwin and Ruth Poulten (Bow) masters E. The crew put in a solid performance with their best average splits for a race this season but unfortunately not good enough to win lost by three quarters of a length against a strong Stourport crew who went on to win in the final.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Stratford upon Avon Boat Club J17/18 girls’ quad of Lucy Sartain, V Vondrak, Scarlett Richardson, and Alex Francis raced the time trial for the Bea Langridge trophy at Henley Women’s Regatta. They raced well, managing to overtake the Molesey crew ahead of them and execute their race plan perfectly. They placed a very respectable joint twenty first out of forty one crews: unfortunately just missing out on an opportunity to progress to side by side racing.

In the first event of the day, Poppy Baines took on the Di Ellis Trophy for Junior Singles, a highly competitive event fielding scullers from across the Atlantic. Facing a hot time trial, Baines secured a place in the side by side elimination rounds where she was drawn against the reigning national champion. A strong start saw her take the lead in the beginning, however she was slowly chipped away by the Chester sculler, knocking her out of the competition on the Saturday afternoon after a hard fought race.

Mammoth Day at Monmouth for Stratford’s Women’s Masters!

A strong squad of masters women from Stratford upon Avon Boat Club competed in both divisions at Sunday’s Monmouth Winter Head, winning medals in the VIII and Quads.

This was the largest number of masters women that Stratford has seen out in a while, boating two VIIIs, three quads and a coxed four. Despite a series of unfortunate events that could have derailed the plans for the day, including crew illness, mechanical failure resulting in two boats remaining at Stratford and some pretty awful weather, the adaptability of the squad members coupled with generosity from Monmouth rescued the situation and saved the day.

In the morning division, the first VIII composite had a very solid row in a time of 7.39mins, beating two other crews. The stern pair of Amanda Bowden and Suzie Radley set a strong rhythm for the crew. The middle four of Heather Hayton, Rebecca England, Ruth Poulten and Charlotte Jones, were called upon a couple of times for extra pushes. The response was felt and the boat lifted, supported with good timing from Rona Fitzpatrick and Susan Brown (Xpress Boat Club) in the bows. The crew was ably coxed by Keris McShane.

The second VIII of Jane Cryer (stroke), Ellie Davies, Emily Sayer, Lin Hansen, Geraldine Chorley, Lucy Kelleher, Claudine Pearson and Paola Arevelo Ward, were confidently coxed along the 2.25km by Jen Carey. The crew went off at a rate of 26 strokes per minute, settling to 24 after three minutes before finishing strongly at 27 with a respectable time of 8.22mins. This was an enjoyable row despite the cold wet conditions and challenges faced in order to get a boat on the water. Jane Cryer commented, “Great to see so many women representing Stratford Boat Club at this event and enjoying their sport.”

In the afternoon division, the winning Women’s Masters C 4x- of Ellie Davis, Gina Fusco, Christine Goodwin and Emily Sayers had a very good row. They beat Worcester by seven seconds. They were delighted with the win having stuck to their race plan and produced a good race.

The winning composite Women’s Masters D/E 4x- of Heather Hayton, Suzie Radley, Amanda Bowden and Susan Brown (Xpress Boat Club) had a fabulous row, in a time of 7.37mins beating Upton and Gloucester.

The novice Women’s Masters D/E 4x- was stroked by Lucy Kelleher and backed up by Jane Connolly, Mel Brown (substitute) and Claudine Pearson. Claudine was steering for the first time in a race. This developmental stage for a sculler is a positive step for racing crews. Mel Brown from Monmouth Boat Club, commented on what a great line Claudine had taken down the river.

The Women’s Masters C 4+ was coxed by Jen Carey, stroked by Rebecca England, was supported by Lin Hansen, Jane Cryer and Ruth Poulten. They came in 26seconds after the winners, Evesham Boat Club. This crew is recently formed and one to watch in the future.

Vice Captain, Amanda Bowden said, “The squad is developing to show real strength in depth. Crews are beginning to see rewards, or will do soon, for the effort they put in. Time on the water and in the gym is ensuring that we have strong and technically competitive crews. I am delighted with the progress this autumn, it bodes well for the summer racing. Thanks goes to Eric Appleton for trailering and supporting the crews on a rather cold, damp day and to the finishing coaches Dan Simkins and Sam Hill.”

Sadly, the juniors squads’ Wycliffe Small Boats Head on Saturday was cancelled at the very last minute after the crews and their boats had travelled to the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal.
